A Pre-Valentine's Day Valentine

Roses are bought and sold,
Hearts are given away,
The gift worth much more than gold,
Is celebrated today.

Singleness is mocked,
Purity is scorned,
Biblical love is balked,
And chastity is mourned.

Is waiting for you old fashioned?
Is patience out of style?
Perhaps I should wallow in lust and passion,
Since pure love is not worth while.

But no, I’m determined to wait for you
With modest propriety,
And while I wait, I’ll prepare for you too,
And pray that you do the same for me.

So today, though I know you not
I give the most precious gift I can:
A heart that has by Christ’s blood been bought,
And is pure and untarnished by man.

So when we stand before man and God,
And say the solemn “I do”,
I can say, after His approving nod,
“I saved myself for you!”

  2. What a beautifully exquisite poem! I love it! It should be the words in every young girls heart who has dedicated herself to waiting for God's choice for a spouse. It was so lovely and heartwarming. Thank you!

  4. Oh Lydia!!
You brought tears to my eyes! The words are so true. You have a wonderful gift of putting the things on your heart to words.
With God's help we shall wait even though it is "old-fashioned". I like being old fashioned and following the Lord. :)
    Love you lots!

  8. Dear ladies,
Thank you all sooo much for your kind and sweet words! I am absolutely tickled pink that you were blessed and encouraged by my poem. It is a blessing to know that there are so many like minded young women (and men too!) who are willing to wait upon God for their future spouse. Thank you for taking the time to comment. I almost cried, I was so moved ;-).
    In Christ,
    Lydia

  9. This poem is so true and beautiful! How precious and important it is to save ourselves for our future husbands! Thank you for posting it, I found it from Miss Jen's blog and really enjoyed it (I read it aloud to my parents so they could enjoy it too), so I decided to drop by and tell you how much I appreciated it!

    Joyfully,

  10. WOW!! An amazing poem. When did you write that? I was reading it and figured you found it somewhere. You should send that in to somewhere to have it published. You know, our family has never observed Valentine's Day. I have seen how the world observes it though, and you hit the nail on the head.

People where I worked and at college would ask me when I first got there, "Do you have a girlfriend yet?" "Have you dated?" The shock on their faces when I said no was incredible. Even when you find someone who you have interest in, there is endless benefit in being "old-fashioned" and patient, taking things one step at a time, and doing things in the way God ordained they should be done.

  11. Emily Rose-
Thanks so much for dropping by! I'm so pleased that you enjoyed it. You have a lovely site as well.

David- I wrote it a put it on the blog in the same day. You're so kind, but I don't think that anyone would publish my poem unless they were, ummm, how should I put this....enlightened. ;-) Maybe someday... And what you said about patience is completely true. It is always worthwhile to wait on God's time.

    Blessings to you both!
    Lydia
